Channel Island Championships 2014

The Gloucester Hall, Fort Regent, Jersey was the venue for the 2014 Channel Island Judo Championships. Twenty Three Junior boys, Seven Junior girls and Ten Senior men represented Guernsey Judo and for most of them it was their first experience of the Inter Island competition.

With the Junior categories commencing with the lightweights at Under 27 kilograms right up to the Over 73 kilos and with ages ranging from 8 to fifteen; there was a big difference in experience on show. Therefore, to highlight particular performances would be difficult as all of the Guernsey Judo club squad members performed exceptionally well throughout the tournament.

The Junior Girls section was dominated by the Guernsey contingent with all of them gaining medals in their weight categories: an excellent achievement.  Fifteen year old Eleanor Coe demonstrated her strength and fitness by defeating two Jersey opponents who were two weight categories above her own; winning with some excellent ground work hold downs.

In the Junior Boys Under 27 kilos, ten year old Lorcan Gallagher showed how his background in rugby has combined with his newly found love of the sport of judo. His determination and will to win proved decisive; earning Lorcan a well-deserved Gold Medal.

A number of weight categories were combined in order to give the Juniors the opportunity to take part in more contests, and although some found fighting heavier opponents an exhausting task; in the spirit of judo they demonstrated a tenacious attitude which brought some surprising results and added to the excitement of the event.

Overall, the highest performance of the tournament must go to fifteen year old Laurence Plevin who not only won the Gold medal in the Junior category; he then went on to win a Senior title later in the day.  Other notable results were Gold medals in the Junior Boys for Sonny Dorey, Josh Lewis, Howard Joyce, Adrien Duffett, and Cody Dorey as well as Millie Ives and Chloe Roberts in the Junior Girls.
