English Open 2016

Louis Plevin has won his first GOLD medal at a National event, defeating some highly ranked GB players at the English Open held at the Breckland L C , Thetford, in East Anglia. The competition was for Juniors (aged under 20 ) and also competing in his new weight category of Under 81 kilos, Louis came through the preliminaries into the medal fight off rounds where he was guaranteed at least a Bronze.   The semi-final saw Louis demonstrate just how much his training over the past six months at Anglia Ruskin University has helped him develop his judo skills by throwing his opponent in 5 seconds.

His devastating counter throw drawing a gasp of approval and a round of applause from the very knowledgeable audience.

The final was won almost as quickly with another example of Louis’ newly found skills with a fast foot sweep followed up with  a strong pinning hold with his coach, Mitch Agnelli, shouting words of encouragement. The final bell was met with a victory punch in the air by a jubilant Guernsey Judo Club member on winning his first National Gold Medal.  The result has catapulted Louis into 7th place on the GB Junior Ranking system and, at 19, he still has another year in this age group, it all augers well for the future. A further bonus was the 10 points he gained towards his Third Dan, Black Belt.

Louis’ next event will be the Hampshire Closed on the 16th April where he will competing at Senior level which should be a good warm up for South Africa at the end of that month where he will compete at both Junior and Senior events in the Commonwealth Judo Association’s bi-annual Championships.
