Southern Area Inter Counties Team Event 2016

Guernsey Judo Club was represented at the 2016 Inter-Counties Team Championships by fifteen year old Howard Joyce.

Joyce had secured his place in the junior (under 16’s) Team by winning the Hampshire Closed Trials in April and he was invited to represent the County in Worthing when the event was held on the 8th May.

The tournament has teams of Junior Boys and Girls as well as Senior Men and Women from the four counties, Hampshire, Surrey, Kent and Sussex which make up the Southern Area of the British Judo Association.

Joyce opened up his account with a lightning 5 second win on his Sussex opponent and followed this up with another solid performance against the Kent champion, holding him down for the required 20 seconds to score another 10 point win for the County.

His third and final bout was against the Surrey number one, Archie Platt, who, as Howard found out after the fight, is a holder of a Black Belt and represents GB as an International Cadet and is currently the 13th ranked junior (under 20 years of age) in the National Ranking.  Despite putting up a spirited performance the greater skill and experience of his opponent managed to wear down Joyce’s defence but it took almost the whole of the four minute bout before Platt was able to finish the fight with his second scoring throw.

It was a very proud mum, Vicky, who saw her son being presented with his tournament medal, Hampshire coming in third equal having been able to only contest 9 out of the possible 11 weight categories due to last minute withdrawals.

Guernsey Judo Coach, Mitch Agnelli, had managed to get to the venue in time to watch Howard compete and said “we have another Louis Plevin in the making and this should inspire our other potentially good juniors to greater things “.
